Update 24 July 2003
Ladies and Gentlemen,

For the last 12 months, while the clock ticked slowly on, our athletes have patiently honed their skills.  Disciplined in training, resolute in their determination, they have feasted on a strict diet of red meat, spuds and old Rambo videos - food for the body, food for the mind. Patient and controlled, they have longed for one more chance to prove themselves at the final event in the Mini-Olympics calender: the TUG-OF-WAR. Their wait is over. Their day has come.

For at 6pm on friday night, at either end of a creaking rope, athletes will lock horns with equally determined opponents and upon the green near the pH bar, they will do battle.  The teams are so evenly matched the outcome is impossible to predict.  Amid a chorus of grunting, snarling and the grinding of teeth they will pull like men inspired...nay...possessed.  Not men, but giants.   (Rest assured that all participants have been reminded of the dangers of eating large quantities of beans before the contest as, under such a fierce strain, accidents have been known to happen).

At stake, not only the honour of a department, but also a year's supply of ammunition to slag off the vanquished.  Several slipped disks later, a victor will emerge. So who will lift aloft the coveted trophy?  Who will earn the right to carve the name of their department on the 'bed-pan' where it will shine immortalised for ever more?  Will BLB East maintain their narrow lead?  Or, in the dying moments of an exhausting campaign, will Physics snatch victory from the jaws of defeat?

When the contest has been decided, spectators and participants alike are cordially invited to wipe the foam off their mouths and dig in for the (in)famous Finals Night BBQ on the grounds of the Downs Club/pH bar.  Enough food to fill 150 stomachs has been ferried in at great expense and needs to be consumed.  A jazz band has been recruited to entertain the masses and ? most importantly - there is no cover-charge so don't be shy!

Remember: TOMORROW NIGHT!

We look forward to seeing you there,
Jayne, Rachael, Jane, Gary.

With the mini-olympics well underway, thoughts must turn to the endof championship extravaganza that is finals night.
The grand finale will this year be held on Fri July 19th, when thetraditional tug-of-war contest will round off the competition in style. When we're not busy desperately wishing for good weather, we are planninga BBQ outside the pH bar to follow the medals ceremony with a small chargeper sausage/burger.

As usual with such events we need an idea of numbers to allow us tocater adequately, so please reply to this email
if you think you will come, and indicate if you are vegetarian. Please could you also ask and respond on behalf of any staff not on email.
