Summary Information:

Karate! I've heard of that.

There are lots of different types of karate, and different clubs emphasise different aspects. Shotokan is the original 'Japanese' karate, popularised by Funakoshi in the 1940s. It has a distinctive look and feel. Shotokan is one of the more common types of karate; the Karate Union of Great Britain is the largest single-style karate organisation in the country.

It's just fighting, right?

Karate clubs are free to emphasise whichever aspects of karate they like; not much of karate is about fighting. There will be a mixture of general fitness, self-defence, and sparring. Karate is much more about development of the self, and 'fighting ability' is a poor metric.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

That's okay; its actually pretty hard to describe properly. Come and try it for a while, and you'll see.

I've never done anything like it before / I used to do it a long time ago / I know kung fu.

There's no previous experience necessary, and there will be something for people of all abilities. We will start off with the absolute basics, and the classes will be designed around who turns up and what they are comfortable with. Safety is a priority, and no-one is getting pushed in the deep end.

I'm in! What should I bring?

Loose clothing is fine. If you have a uniform, great. No shoes, socks, jewellery, watches, or earrings please. Uniforms can be bought through the club if you decide you want to stay and take gradings and so forth. No need to worry about that yet.

I have questions! So many questions.

Lots of information about what you can expect and what karate is can be found on the kenmei website (click for access), listed above. I'm totally happy for you to come and talk to me, or email me, if you have questions or concerns.
