Squash Committee Newsletter June 2012
Just a

· Awards and Forthcoming AGM
· New Mitsubishi Air Con System
· Squash Lock
· UPS AGM May 2012 & 50th Anniversary
· Coaching
Committee
Membership
Thank you again
to Hiran and Marco for kindly volunteering their services. Your views and
opinions on all our squash matters will be very much appreciated.
Thank you
also to Harry who has recently kindly offered to take up the post of Treasurer.
Jon has
been keeping things ticking over nicely for the last year after announcing his
intention to stand down from the post when a replacement was found. So I would
just like to take this opportunity to thank Jon for everything he’s done for
the club in his tenure since Nov 2006 (and for putting up with me always trying
to spend ‘his’ money !).
Can I
suggest we co-opt Harry as Assistant Treasurer (as per Jon in
2006) in lieu of a proper vote in the AGM to the full post. This will allow us to
start filling in the banking mandate documents. Can I also suggest that Chris B
becomes a signatory as one of the officers, so that we have enough people to
sign things off ?
Awards
& Forthcoming AGM
Apologies
for the delay in getting a date set for this year’s Squash AGM.
Both Jon
and I have had a few personal distractions this year and it has sadly meant the
accounts and awards have a taken us a bit longer than usual to get sorted.
With regard
to awards I will shortly be circulating the contenders for Best Improver and Most
league Games Played 2011 in a separate email shortly. Please vote
if you can - this is one of the few duties of the full committee, so it would
be nice to get a representative opinion from everyone if possible.
I
anticipate we will set a date for the AGM on a Thursday sometime in late
June. So please let me know if you have any matters for
discussion.
New
Mitsubishi Air Con System
The new
system (2 x SRK717K-S; 2 x 7.5KW) is now fully operational.
It was
fitted in mid March and it has taken a couple of months to complete the
snagging:
· Insufficient
power on initial feed, so Quartzray ceiling heating circuit has been disabled
and used for one of the new units.
· Temperature
control - this is by remote control and we now finally know how to set things
up !
The units
will be in cooling mode for summer (min 18°C) and heating mode for the winter
(also min 18°C). We have agreed with the installers to see how 18°C
feels in the winter and have reserved the option of a ‘circuit modification’
should this temperature be thought to warm.
We have now
settled fully on the bill, which we agreed by committee on 12.02.12: £4752
incl of VAT.
We have
also negotiated a 3 year maintenance contract inclusive in that price (over and
above the standard 1year). A saving of £120 over the 2 additional years. The
parts warranty (manufacturer) is 3 years.
Squash
Door Lock
Mark
noticed last week that the digital entry lock was faulty.
I’ve
stripped it down and have found that the ratchet/cog mechanism has been damaged
badly - the teeth on the cogs have been irretrievably stripped.
I think we
have 2 options:
· Repair
the current lock if the manufacturers are still in business. Initial search has
found a KeyLex website (subsidiary of Relcross Ltd). I will ring them next
week.
· Source
an alternative - there is a ‘brand new’ 2100 model on e-bay at the moment for
£150. RRP is between £400-£500.
In the meantime
the lock is on ‘freeflow’. We were kindly given this lock by RMH facilities in
2003. At the time I was told it was a £200 lock. It had been in previous use
with the Marsden, but I don’t know for how long.
UPS
AGM May 2012 & 50th Anniversary
There was
nothing controversial at this year’s meeting on 24.05.12.
The club
seems to be doing quite well for a change.
Usage of
the bar is up. The decking has made a big difference to the ‘feel’ of the club.
The
Thursday night quizes have also increased attendance.
There is
also a fundraising campaign to try to recoup the cost of the decking and to
generally boost the UPS coffers.
Web page [http://theupsclub.co.uk/fundraising2012/fundraising2012.htm].
I wondered
if the Squash Section can think of some fundraising ventures and maybe split
the proceeds 50:50 with the UPS Club - any ideas ?
I asked if
there were any truth in the rumours regarding the demolition of the club. I was
assured by Nathan that there were no plans for the next 10 years or so for the
land. Barbara Harrington also assured the meeting that the club sits on ‘amenity land’
(Amenity Space Clause*) and as such
there is a restriction on its use (council related). It was noted that the old
Sutton Hospital buildings are vacant and that the Marsden are interested in the
land. I ask specifically about the squash court as it looks vulnerable on it’s
own, and because I had heard rumours of a planned road. Again I was assured
that nothing official has been relayed. I asked Nathan if he would kindly keep
his ear to the ground in case we need to make representations in the future.
* Correction (S.Edwards: Chairman Ups Club Squash Section: 25 July 2012)
Coaching
Ronnie is
currently half way through a 6 week formal coaching course.
He has
kindly offered to run some informal sessions
(ad hoc) for us after the course ends.
Please
spread the news and let your friends know to contact Chris (chris.bunton@icr.ac.uk) if interested.
Please
circulate your thoughts in the usual ‘reply to all’ way, as well as please
letting me know if you would like a meeting to discuss anything else.
Thank you all for your continued help and support for the club throughout the year,
and I look forward to seeing you all at the forthcoming Squash AGM,
Cheers,
Steve
