Update 20.03.08
20/03/2008
Dear All,
Just a small update on this. There was a set of typos in the
headings of Most League Games Played. The dates were wrong and have been fixed.
The data underneath should be fine though !
The issue of the 'pink boxes' and what to do with them has
been raised. This potentially a tricky matter, so I think this should be
debated in person - so have provisionally set 3.30pm in BLB canteen today as
a time to meet up and discuss. Please come along if you want to join in or
have any other questions - e.g. coaching ?
Sorry for the short notice,
Cheers,
Steve
Minutes of
meeting (20 March 2008: BLB 3.30-4.10pm):
Present: Sandra, Jon, Mark, Steve
Apologies: Received from Louise, Neil
Steve explained that the 'pink' boxes in the ‘Most League
Games Played’ section (sent as SquashStat2007.xls - see below) were to
highlight players who had not played any games in that league period due to
injury or not informing the league organiser that they were absent.
One such instance had not been highlighted in pink so this
was actioned to be corrected.
Of the six pink boxes, 3 were due to injury, one due to
holidays not notified and two for leaving the ICR without notification.
There was debate on the effect of how injury should be
considered and then factored into the calculation.
A proposal was made to tag those players who were unable to
play their matches due to injury. It was thought that they shouldn't be
penalised for not being able to play. So instead of writing 0/4 or 0/3 a tag
could be added to indicated 'inj' for injured.
It was noted that opponents of these unplayed (injured)
matches have not been penalised in the current calculation, and would not be in
the future either. The opponents are always given walkovers in such situations
- which count as games played.
So the feeling was to adjust the 'pink' boxes this time
(including holidays) but not for leavers and factor all this into future year's
calcs. However we may not be so lenient on players who do not inform the league
organiser of holidays in the future. If players who leave do not inform the
organiser then it is their loss.
The consequence of the adjustment was that we end up with a
few more 100%ers, namely Steve and Mark !
The squash committee was subsequently emailed to ask if they
were all OK with this proposal.
If you are then I'll circulate a revised file for
consideration.
AOB - a provisional date for the AGM was set as 24 April 2008.
Meeting closed 4.10pm

Hi Steve
Thanks for updating us on the outcome of the meeting. But doesn't this raise the issue of what
happens to players who have been injured for part of the month, but still
managed to play some of their games? I'm
sure this would account for many of the unplayed matches.
Cheers,
Neil

Dear Neil,
Thanks for your enquiry,
We discussed this situation, and we thought it would be fair
to award walk-overs to those players who couldn't play their matches if an
opponent became injured in say the middle of the league. This would rely on the
league organiser getting the notification of the injury.
In addition if a walk-over was to be awarded - particularly
if it was in the last week of a league, then that player will need to have
played the majority of their games. I.e. show they weren't leaving things until
last minute. I guess the bottom line is that the league organiser may have to
show some degree of discretion in these situations.
The plan would be for injured players 'denominator' (no. of
matches possible to play) to be adjusted to compensate for their injury.
Cheers, Steve

Dear All,
Can I please ask you to perform this year’s most important
job !
The attached Excel file will show you who is in the running
for prizes this year for:
a) Best League Improver 2006 - 2007 (25 pounds plus plaque
from 2000 onwards)
b) Most League Games Played 2006 - 2007
Please can you let me know your choice for Best Improver
there are some details of performances in the Excel 'Readme' which may aid your
decision. My apologies in advance for comments that may be construed as
'judgmental' particularly in view of the fact that there is a committee member
in the running ! So voting on this should be ‘private’ please, I will then send
around a consensus for further consideration.
I would like to propose we raise the prize money for this
award from 25 pounds to 40 pounds. There hasn’t been an increase since 2000,
and I believe we should ‘incentivise’ people to improve - perhaps this amount
of money is more in line with modern-day thinking. Obviously if you play for
Wales a good b*****ing at half time does the trick !! Views please…..
Could I also ask you to consider what threshold you would
like to set for potential prize winners in the ‘Most League Games Played’
award.
Last year we set a threshold of 95 percent played with 78 pounds shared
between 8 winners (2 x 100%). If we retain 95% this year there will be 10
people in contention. It’s pretty obvious that more leagues games are being
played, so please circulate your views (as ever cc all please) on our initial
thinking on these awards, as the policy seems to be working. It could also be
co-incidence as there appears to be a general surge in interest (as noted by
Ron on several occasions with his contacts) ?
Please feel free to comment on the size of the awards if you
wish and to forward agenda suggestions for the forthcoming AGM (date to be
arranged, but suggest sometime in mid-April ?). I don’t think there are any
major things cooking at the moment. I think Chau would like to have a rest from
the coaching organisation - thank you very much indeed Chau for all your past efforts
with this. I believe Laura Robison has kindly agreed to step in to help with
this. Please let me know if there are any other such changes on your minds, or
if you fancy a go at my job or any other job ?
Ron was kindly in touch with me yesterday, and is keen to
get coaching going again. I suggested 01 May for a start for formal coaching.
He is also willing to run informal stuff on Thursday as before if there is
interest.
Happy voting !
Cheers, Steve
