‘Virtual’ General Meeting Started 14

Replacing Ventaxia Fan
and Control Unit.
Found old controller unit burnt out 14.11.08.
Fan unit and new controller fitted by Gary
Marchant of AMP Electrical 08.04.09.
Bill was £1006=61 (incl VAT). Paid by
BACS 29 April 2009. The controller is capable of bi-directional control, but
the existing wiring only allows extraction mode. Ventaxia model S12PL &
W362230 controller specified on replacement invoice. Receipt for payment
received 05.05.09.
The fan broke down around 08 May 2010 and was
replaced almost free of charge (£117.50) on 15 June 2010. The reason for
the charge was because of labour charges.

Explanation
Dear Gary,
Thank you very much
for kind reply and explanation.
I wasn’t aware of
your policy to ask for a contribution towards repairs, but now that you have
explained the matter, I will recommend to the Squash Committee (by copy of this
email) that we agree the payment of £117=50 suggested in your invoice.
Thank you also
for confirming that the replacement fan has the same specification as the
initial one fitted
I can also
confirm that during the telephone discussions with Paul, he did advise that the
inherent fault found in the fan would mean that the manufacturers would not be
shipping until Sep/Oct 2010. However on a subsequent call he said that a
‘direct’ replacement would be provided - I then confirmed this back by email
(02 June below). I had therefore assumed that this meant the S12Pl
‘manufacturer fix’ had been addressed.
I can confirm
that you did advise me when the S12Pl was originally fitted that we would need
to modify the wiring for bi-directional function. I was also aware that a speed
controller was an ‘extra’ for the S12Pl. If the committee feels the need for
either of these facilities on the replacement fan, then I hope we can approach
you for a quotation.
Thank you again
for your kind help with this and I’m sorry for any confusion that may have been
caused by my misunderstanding of the situation.
Kind regards,
Steve

Subject: RE: Squash Court - Replacement Fan 15.06.10 / Invoice
Hi Steve,
Thank you for your email and taking the
time to contact us. Firstly I would like to confirm that you are indeed correct
that you have a right under the sale of goods act to have your goods (in
this case your fan) replaced. This unfortunately does not include the cost of
any associated labour involved to replace it! This has been the case for
as long as I have been in the electrical contracting industry. We as a company
have no way of contra-charging the manufactures for labour associated with
replacement of equipment that we purchase on behalf of our clients.
As previously stated, we ask purely for
a contribution towards our costs in replacing your faulty fan. If you feel that
this is not fair then we will not pursue you for the invoice.
With regards to the change of fan, the
fan is identical in performance to the previous fan (if anything it has a
slightly increased performance) I believe that a conversation was had by
yourself and Paul Buchan (A.M.P) regarding the change of model, as the
manufactures were unlikely to have the new model (updated to correct the
inherent fault) available prior to September 2010/October 2010. It is my
understanding that you were happy to have the alternative model suggested (only
difference is the fan chassis design)
With Regards to the direction and speed
control, the speed is adjustable via the inbuilt capacitor location on the fan,
this is the new way of controlling the fans speed. With regard to direction of
the fan, the existing wiring that you have is not capable and never has been
capable of Bi-directional control. This I believe may have been pointed out by
myself before. The wiring at the squash court is a standard PVC-PVC twin and
CPC cable, this in fact means that there is a Phase wire (live) and a neutral
wire plus an earth wire (CPC) in order to achieve Bi-directional control there
must be also a secondary Phase conductor (live) This type of cable is not
present and never has been so bi-directional control is not achievable without
additional wiring and of course additional cost.
I hope that this is of some help to you,
however if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards
Gary Marchant

Subject: Squash Court - Replacement Fan 15.06.10 / Invoice
Dear Paul and
Gary,
Thank you very
much for sending through the invoice dated 24.06.2010 (copy attached for squash
committee information).
I must admit it
was a bit of a surprise to receive this as I had assumed the works would be covered
by the manufacturer’s guarantee and the sale of goods act for ‘faulty’ goods.
I don’t recall
any charges for the fan replacement being raised by Paul during the replacement
discussions. I note from the invoice that we are being asked to make a ‘contribution
to works’ of £100 + VAT.
I also note that
the replacement fan is a TL12PL. It was my understanding that we were being
provided with a ‘direct’ replacement (email 02.06.10). The S12Pl fan that was
initially installed on 08.04.09 was selected because of its bi-directional
ability - this was a feature that we specifically wanted. The reason I wrote to
you on 15 June was to find out if the replacement TL12Pl fan also has this
capability.
I hope to be able
to talk to you during this week so that we can clear things up in case there
have been any misunderstandings.
Kind regards,
Steve

Dear Gary,
Thanks very much
for your kind voicemail earlier on - I’m sorry I missed you.
I’m afraid the
reception wasn’t brilliant, so I hope we can speak again in person soon so that
I can get a full grasp of your kind explanation.
I gather that the
new fan may not be bi-directional and that it has three potential speed
settings and that it was set at max.
Hopefully when we
have a chat we can clarify this as it was my understanding that the fan
originally fitted had a bi-directional facility.

Dear Paul,
Just a quick email for the benefit of the
committee's information, confirming what we discussed yesterday on the phone.
Thank you for confirming that the faulty fan is
subject to a 2 year manufacturer's guarantee.
Thank you also for suggesting the two possible
fixes:
1) To wait until around September for supply of
a direct replacement. The delay in supply due to demand on upgraded unit (fan motor
upgrade because of design fault in current model).
2) For Gary to kindly source and alternative
that could be fitted sooner.
Thank you also for considering my suggestion of
sourcing a temporary replacement in lieu of Fix No. 1.
I look forward to hearing more news on your
enquiries,
Kind regards,

Subject: Ventaxia Fan & Dehumidifier Update 25.11.08
Dear All,
Just a short
update on these matters.
The venaxia fan
(front wall ceiling mounted) and control unit appear to be defunct. This unit
helps to remove water vapour from the court. They were inspected by AMP
Electrical yesterday. I am awaiting a quote for a replacement and fitting. The
Ventaxia model we have is no longer available, so hopefully a suitable
alternative will be sourced. There is a small chance that some joinery will be
needed to help the new unit fit. We will also incurr scaffolding charges
(approx £100 per day). I am hoping that perhaps we can borrow the ICR gantry
and I am also making enquiries with Don Taylor of RMH Facilities.
The dehumidier is
also playing up. The outside upper coils are totally iced up and the unit is
therefore not performimg properly (essentially no warm air - I’m not sure about
the air borne vapour removal). Tech Refridgeration Services have been contacted
and will attend tomorrow to inspect.
Please let me
know if there are any other things that need attending to as I have a bit of
time on my hands at the moment !
I hope the party
comes off !!
Best wishes,
Cheers,
Steve

Subject: Ventaxia Fan Major Problem - Squash Court
Dear All,
Just a short line to say
that the Ventaxia fan unit at the squash court has been turned OFF at
the controller in the ‘wooden’ electrical control box.
Phil and I were about to
start a game at lunch time and smelt burning. We tracked the smell back to the
wooden box and we think the smoke was coming from the Ventaxia control box. The
smoke stopped as soon as the unit was switched to the OFF position. The unit
was extremely hot, and I suspect that either the controller or fan unit itself
(mounted in the front wall ceiling) are faulty. The fan has been there ever
since I can remember !
I’m going to tape up the
control unit to stop someone turning it on and then try to find an electrician
to sort this out.
Chris - would you happen to know if we have a friendly
electrician we could approach ?
In the meantime I think it
is OK to carry on playing.
The good news is that the
air con unit is working again. It has been ‘up’ for a couple of days now. The service
company said they had found a loose wire and have now repaired it. The court
was a balmy 14.5C when we played at lunchtime (without the electric heaters) !
I hope the Ventaxia matter
is a separate matter and has happened coincidentally. The sparky should be able
to assess this hopefully.
Just also to let you know
that the formal 6 week coaching course started last night with Ron. It should
run to 18 Dec (incl). Can I just take this opportunity to thank Laura for
another outstanding effort in promoting and organising this course. We have
another good batch of beginners - who I guess will be the lifeblood of the
club.
Best wishes,
Steve
