‘Virtual’ General Meeting - 04 October 2010

Proposal to Increase Cost of Six Week Coaching Course from £30 to £42.

And to Offer Discount to Returning Coachees.

In view of no further committee input, the proposal to increase the coaching fees to £42 and to offer a discount to returning coachees, was carried. [The proposals were subsequently discussed again thoroughly at the 2008 -10 AGM on 12 May 2011 and approved once again by all the members present]

Dear Mark,

Thanks very much for your kind input.

How about if we officially record a criterion of 4 from 6, and in practice let Laura use her discretion on the actual application in case there are other factors to take into consideration. After all it’s Laura that would have to run this system, so we need her valued opinion.

For the time being I suggest we advertise the discount as per draft as the flyers etc also need to be printed.

Cheers, Steve

That sounds reasonable (or we could say they could book 2 courses upfront for a reduced rate).  Do we only offer the discount to those people who have attended all of a previous course? Or more than 4 dates out of 6?

Subject: Committee Newsletter Dec/Jan 2011 / 2 Proposal Coaching Fees

Dear All,

Just a quick update on this as we are planning another coaching course starting on 12th May.

Could I suggest that we offer the possibility of a discount to returning coachees who generally had a good attendance record ?

So instead of £42 then perhaps their fees could be a pound or so less per session, say £36.

A discount would only be offered if we fully cover the cost of the course.

I think offering a discount should cover all bases as it rewards returning players as they will already have shown their commitment to attending. New coachees would pay the full price and our theory of ‘incentivising’ attendance can be put to the test !

Have attached a draft with new wording for your consideration….

Cheers, Steve

Steve

I was going to talk to you about the course fees at the squash championships, but you were ill. Hope you are better now.

I think proposal 1 is better. If people do not turn up it is their problem. The course is fun and most weeks you feel like it improves you as a player, there should not need to be any incentive to go.

2 Proposals

There were 2 proposals regarding the coaching fees and potential surpluses.

You will have read Laura and Mark’s kind responses. Thank you for these.

Perhaps their views should form the basis of further debate. However we shouldn’t forget that Laura is kindly running this facility for us, so perhaps we should give more weight to her views as she will ultimately be at the sharp end (of the fence !)

There didn’t seem to be any dissent towards adding a £2 pound coin facility to the meter, so I’ll address this at the same time as the warranty repair.

Happy New Year to you all.  Lovely update Steve so thanks for this and all the hard work you put in the rest of the year.

I am split on the proposals for the coaching surplus.  The surplus should go into the club for general use but not sure how this should be spent.  Firstly I agree that it should go to any shortfall in the coaching though what is the possible shortfall unless the course is under subscribed?  We could offer reduced prices for subsequent coaching courses but does this go against the argument that people are more likely to turn up if they have paid their own money? And is there a minimum attendance level that they need to achieve to qualify for the discount?

We could offer to pay for food at the next "fun evening" at David Lloyd but we have to be careful that it is not seen as just for the committee (or should that be "hard core"?). I know that we advertised it to everyone so it was open to all.  I don't know how many people can be accommodated at such an evening as it seemed quite full last time so presumably there is a restriction on numbers and how would we do this?

So no real conclusions from me I'm afraid (New Years resolution is to sit on the fence more).

£2 coins are a good idea for the meter.

Hi all,

Thanks for the update Steve.

Re excess money from coaching course:

I think proposal 2 would be a good incentive for coachees to attend more of the sessions, as it is a bit disappointing when only 1 or 2 turn up for a lesson or none at all which was the case for the final beginners lesson before Christmas.  It might be a bit complicated to work out who is owed money back though- we might have to make them sign a register as I don't think I can commit to being at the court each Thursday to monitor attendance.

Re £2 coins in meter- yes, good idea

Laura

Just also to let you know that Ron was told in November that we anticipated making a bit more profit on the 6 week courses because the charge was raised from £30 up to £42. Ron was offered a rise, but kindly declined. Can I therefore make the following proposals:

Proposal 1: that any extra monies raised can be used to subsidise food at any future ‘Fun Night’. The participants will essentially be coachees so they will get their ‘money’ back. This of course is not forgetting that any profits will go towards the loss we make as a club on court revenue on Thursday nights. Ron was fine with this suggestion.

Proposal 2: This proposal has also been discussed with Laura. We could give discounts on further courses to coachees who have paid the full £42. In essence the price was raised from £30 to £42 in order to try to incentivise people to continue attending - the idea being that quite a bit of money has been paid out, and so participants don’t want to waste it. In effect the proposal means that if people have a good attendance record then they will be ‘rewarded’ with subsequent discounts ?

Laura and Steve

I agree that we should raise the cost. But rather than say it will cost around £40 why not put the actual cost. Is it £40? Perhaps we ought to say £42 which is £7 a lesson?

Dear Laura - Here a DRAFT for the Marsden Bulletin:

I think it’s time to increase the cost of the course.  This is in line with what Ron’s been thinking for a couple of years now. We may not be charging enough to keep attendance levels up for the 6 weeks as coachees may not have complete commitment because they don’t stand to lose that much money.

I suggest we increase the cost from £30 to £40. So have copied in the committee for their views.

The other plus would be that we can give a Ron a rise - the last one was in 2007 !

Cheers, Steve
