Committee NewsLetter 28 July 2009 / Update
Dear
All,
Just
a few things to report.
Court Roof Repair: This were conducted on 15.08.09 - see PDF attachment (click here) for more details.
Lionel’s Membership Memo: The Marsden ‘comms team’ was requested by Helen
Taylor (06.08.09) to send out Lionel’s memo.
Trouble in the Hall on Weekend: This turned out to be an 18th
birthday party and not an 21st as was presumed by the Ups Committee.
The party went badly wrong and a lot of vandalism and theft took place. The
committee discussed this on 12.08.09 and a new hall booking policy will be
implemented to avoid further occurrences. In the meantime any major booking
needs to go through Helen. I have the minutes if anyone is interested.
Please
circulate your thoughts as well as letting me know if you would like a meeting
to discuss anything else.
Cheers,
Steve

Dear All,
Just a
‘short’ line to update you on a few things:
Injury
on court: Further
to last week’s notification, it has been confirmed that the player has a
multiple fracture of the collar bone. The player is currently recuperating with
family. The accidental injury has been logged on the squash archives as per
insurance requirement. The get well card will be with Sandra for a few more
days. I will arrange for flowers to be sent as I now have the address.
Permission was received to report the injury to the insurance company (officers
have been copied in). A RIVO report will be completed once back at work.
Court
Roof Repair:
Following consensus from the squash committee, Romfords has been appointed as
the preferred contractor and their representative Alex has already been in
touch. He is waiting for the first forecast 2-day dry spell to start the
works - fingers crossed he might get lucky this year !!
Emergency
Phone: As a
consequence of the recent injury, Mark proposed that we try to ensure that
players know where the nearest telephone is for emergency use. As a consequence
notices were placed in the court to let players know that there is a phone in
the Downs Hall foyer. I tried the line last week and it’s works. I
dialled ‘0’ and not the 2222 emergency number. Just as a memo, the rules advise
that players bring a mobile phone with them for security and emergency use
(Rule 12). The rules list was ratified at the last AGM (see web sites). As a
result of this injury, we have re-visited the possibility of installing a phone
extension in the court. Chris Stott is currently kindly leading on this. When
there is more news it will be circulated.
Lionel’s
Membership Memo: As
you will have seen, Lionel kindly sent out an email last Wednesday asking
players to email him their membership details. This will allow him to maintain
a membership list and allow us to comply with our constitutional and insurance
requirements. Notices were also put up in the court to catch people without
email. I am in the process of arranging for the message to be sent out by the
Marsden via their newly created ‘comms team’.
New Air
Conditioning System:
Further to the email circulation to you of ZIP and associated files on
29.04.09, I negotiated a lower price with Tech Refrigeration Services for a full
air con system and protective grille for the indoor blower. The new quote
is now £6,000 inclusive of VAT. I will circulate fuller details for your
consideration once things are a bit ‘quieter’ on other squash matters !
Squash Lights: As you know, some of the fluorescent tubes are not firing
properly after they were changed in April by the painter. This is still on my
‘to-do list’, but the matter has been placed on the back burner for the moment
whilst other issues are dealt with.
New
Squash Roof: Just
to recap: I reported to the Ups Committee on 15.07.09 that we were proposing to
repair the roof for the moment in lieu of a future replacement. I asked if it
was the Marsden’s responsibility (as landlords) to maintain or replace the
roof. The answer was unknown. But it was proposed that we write to the Marsden
to ask if they will solely fund a new roof. If they decline then the committee
suggested we look into requesting split funding (RMH/ICR/Ups Club/ Squash
Section) as was done for the last Downs Club refurbs. This matter is also on my
‘to-do’ list.
Online Booking
System: I also
reported to the Ups Committee that we were assessing the possibility of an
online squash booking system. I pointed the committee at the web links we
discussed at the May AGM and asked if they would be interested in such a system
for the Hall and Swimming Pool. I also asked if they might be interested in
some sort of funding split if the proposal was taken further. More news on this
hopefully after the next meeting.
AGM
Minutes: Draft
minutes for you consideration are at:
http://intra.icr.ac.uk/upsdowns/_sq_agm_2007_2008.htm
http://theupsclub.co.uk/upsdowns/_sq_agm_2007_2008.htm
Please let
myself or Mark know of any corrections or omissions.
Trouble
in the Hall on Weekend: Something went on in the hall on the w/e that has necessitated its
closure. When I know more I will circulate.
Please
circulate you views on these matters or any others you may have,
Cheers,
Steve
