Final Update and Message from Nadia Mudie (by email 11.08.04)

Dear all,

Before we all forgotten what we did this summer - the Mini-Olympics, of course, I wanted to say one last Big Thank you to all of you who contributed to the success of the Eastenders team either performing or supporting - you've done fantastically well this year yet again!

Also, many thanks to the members of all other teams and the organisers for putting all the effort into it and making the Sutton site such a fun place to work in! (well, at least for me!).

Lastly, Nick Hearly and me have put some of our photos from the Mini-o one the web, thanks to Steve Edwards, so have a look if you haven't done so already: http://intra.icr.ac.uk/mini/2004/Mini_O_2004_Photos/Mini_o_2004_photos.htm

Best wishes
Nadia

Week 5- Update

Eleven of the twelve events are now completed. In the badminton last week, Big Mac team captains Yin and Maurizio showed that they are also mean badminton players, and won the final in style. Six teams competed at netball, which went well despite that for some men it was their first introduction to the game; the Therapeutics team won. On Thursday, the pH bar was packed for the Miniolympic quiz, which was won by six geniuses from BLB East. This week, Big Macs won the Pool on Tuesday, MUCRC the running (which was held in Oaks Park) on Wednesday, Eastenders the tennis (well done Mark and partner) and Therapeutics the snooker. For all other placings see the Miniolympic website, http://intra.icr.ac.uk/mini/results.htm

Overall, the Eastenders have now collected 100 points which gives them an unassailable lead; they will collect the historic Bedpan Trophy this evening. Congratulations to their efficient captains Nadia and Chris. Behind them come Therapeutics, Big Macs, MUCRC, Westsiders, Physics and Chemistry; the final placings depend on the tug-of-war, at about 6 p.m. this evening. Last year the event was rained off, but we have excellent weather this year. Come and cheer your team! If you're pulling, best bring some gloves..... the rope is rough on the fingers!

Week 4- Update

We have had two more exciting finals. Last week MUCRC won the table tennis contest, beating Westsiders 2-0 in the final; well done, Alan and Tina. Monday evening an efficiently organized Physics team beat Therapeutics to take the Volleyball crown, as they did last year.

On the basis of matches played so far, Eastenders, Therapeutics and MUCRC are nosing ahead of the other 4 teams. But there's a lot still to happen.

Eastenders failed to defend their badminton title against Big Macs on Tuesday night, MUCRC and Therapeutics were third and fourt respectively

There are more finals this week: Netball (Wed), Quiz (Thurs) and on Friday Therapeutics, Big Macs, Eastenders and Physics play darts.

On Wednesday we have our first (ever?) Miniolympics Netball contest. There are six teams competing, all-play-all, at Nonsuch school where a group of Institute staff has been meeting to play regularly over the last year.

On Thursday evening brawn takes a rest and brain takes over. The Miniolympic Quiz will be in the pH bar at 6 p.m., in the usual pub quiz format. The bar will provide the necessary lubrication.

Next week we shall have the Pool finals, the races, and the tug-of-war, culminating in the finals celebration and award of the Miniolympic trophy. Do't miss it!

Week 3- Update

Miniolympics are in full swing now, with five events this week!

Tuesday evening saw the culmination of the first event: the Squash final. As last year, this was won by the Eastenders in cracking form; well done, Chris, Louise and Peter.

In other events, the following teams have got through to semifinals -
Table tennis - MUCRC and Therapeutics
Pool - Chemistry and Westsiders
Badminton - Eastsiders and Big Macs
Volleyball - Physics v. Eastsiders, Therapeutics v. Chemistry

The volleyball was so vigorously contested on Monday that two balls went into the stratosphere and were lost! - can anyone think of a way to retrieve them from the roof and rafters in time for the semifinals?

On current form, the favourites for the trophy are Eastenders, closely pursued by Therapeutics and MUCRC - but there's a long way to go yet! If you're not playing, do come and support your team - it's free entertainment.

If watching the volleyball, better wear your steel hat.....

Week 1 - Summary

The Miniolympics got off to a vigorous start, with the first volleyball session on Monday evening. Each of the 6 matches was hotly contested (hotly, because it was about 27 degrees in there). The four teams were more evenly matched than the final score suggests - Therapeutics 3 wins, Eastenders 2, Westsiders 1, MUCRC 0.

In the squash on Tuesday, Eastenders were successful again; they and MUCRC qualified for the finals. For detailed results visit http://intra.icr.ac.uk/mini/mini_o_homepage.htm which will be updated as soon as possible after each event.

A group from MUCRC have been playing table tennis every other day for the last few months, so it came as no surprise that they won the first table tennis group on Wednesday. Therapeutics also qualified for the finals (corrected from original email 18.06.04).

For the last excitement of the week, gather round the pool table in the pH bar this Friday evening!

If you are competing in an event, please be ready to start at 6 p.m.; in other words, if you want to warm up and practise (or be taught how to play!), be there earlier. Most events will be open at 5.30.

Remember - there are points for the losers as well as the winners, so better a poor team than no team at all.....
