GUESTS and TASTERS
Only Ups Club
members may play squash as The Ups Club is a members-only club. However members
may bring a guest with them to play. Members must inform one of the Squash Committee that they have brought
a guest - this will be logged. The guest however can only attend a maximum of three times. This is a stipulation of
our squash insurance policy (click for
link), and the official name for these attendances is a ‘Taster’ Session. Under the insurance
stipulations, each Taster Session
and the guest name has to be recorded in a log. The log file is called Squash Guest
Taster Log File 26.01.09.xls and is administered by the Squash
Committee and password protected for confidentiality.
The Squash Committee
reserves the right to give consideration to certain categories of non-members
to use the court, for example in July 2022 there was a request from the Royal
Marsden Physiotherapy Department asking if a recovering patient could use the court.
This request was considered and granted with consensus by the Squash Committee
with the stipulation that a committee member was present for the session - see VGM 13.09.22.
Children (U18) Associate or Family Members cannot
play without supervision from a parent or legal guardian. U18’s must be Associate or Family Members of the Ups Club. U18’s who are not members
will not be allowed to attend as
Guests. Parents supervising U18 Associate or Family Members must have the CONSENT of the
non-dependant Associate or Family Member to play. Verbal permission is OK. U18
Associate or Family Members cannot bring Guests to play. These points are
covered in our Draft Children’s
and Vulnerable Adults Policy.
LEAGUES (Full)
The Section runs a
league, where there are generally 4 people in a league (see Current Squash Leagues). The leagues run on a monthly
basis (July/August, Dec/Jan combined). Generally the top player is promoted and
the bottom player demoted - however this is not guaranteed and is at the
discretion of the ‘League Organiser’.
Organising the matches is down to the individuals, contact numbers are on the
web page (see Current Squash Leagues) or on the hard
copy versions (RMH canteen, Sports Club foyer and in Squash Court foyer). The
matches are best of 5 games, please record the scores on the squash court copy.
To join the squash leagues it is preferable to play a player already in the
league however if this is not possible, then a member of the Squash Committee
can arrange for someone to play you. Please contact the League Organiser (see
list on Squash Section Home Page ). New members to
the league will generally be placed in a league of five players so as to
preserve the promotion/demotion system whereby only one person is promoted or
demoted per league of 4.
Any grievances regarding match results or the award of a ‘walk-over’ by the League
Organiser should be addressed to a member of the Squash Management Committee
and the Officers of the Squash Club will consider the appeal (Agreed at AGM
02.08.12).
LEAGUES (Novice)
In April 2004 the
Section introduced Novice Leagues. These were initiated after a request from
people who had just been on the Coaching Course.
They wanted to be in a league by themselves whilst they were still learning and
not be promoted or demoted. The Novice Leagues will continue to be run for
people who don't want to enter the full leagues, however a ballot was taken in
Oct 2004 and the outcome was that there will be promotion and demotion within
these leagues, but not generally into the full leagues until requested by
individuals.
FRIENDLY'S
The section has a
friendly contact list for those players who do not wish to play competitively (Friendly Contact List )
COACHING
The Squash Section attempts
to run two formal (6 week) coaching courses every year with a Squash Racquets
Association qualified coach. The courses are aimed at all level of players,
especially total beginners, and are
generally run around April/May and October/November. During the intervening
times, we organise coaching on an ‘informal’
basis. For more information please contact the Coaching Organiser or see the Squash Coaching Web Page.
