Committee Newsletter December 2010
Squash Committee Newsletter December
2010.
Just a
‘short’ line to update you on a few things:
First a
welcome to new committee members.
We welcome
Harry onto the committee as Club Captain. This position has been vacant
for quite some time and Harry has kindly offered to take on the role of
organising inter-club matches as well to alert/organise trips to professional
matches. I believe there are tickets available to watch the World Series Finals
on 11th -15th January Queens Club, London.

We also
welcome Simon and Sara onto the committee as Ordinary Members. Their views
and opinions on all our squash matters will be very much appreciated. Sara has
also kindly offered to sell stickers from the BLB.
AGM
& Accounts
Jon has
kindly offered to draw up the 2 sets of accounts for Jan - Dec 2009 and
similarly for 2010. I’m also gathering stats and Best Improver data. Once
everything is ready I propose we hold both the 2009 & 2010 AGM’s together
in early 2011.
The 2009
accounts will split light meter takings into pre and post price increase (June
01, 2009).
Coaching
& Fun Night
Can I just
take this opportunity to thank Laura on behalf of the committee for the great
job she’s been doing to organise the coaching and more recently the ‘Fun Night’
at David Lloyd’s in Epsom - there was fantastic feedback after the event that
Ron (our coach) kindly put on for us on 28th October. It was
unanimously agreed that another similar night should be held toward the end of
Jan/beginning of Feb 2011, and Ron kindly offered to look into this for us.
Thank you Ronnie for this and for all your fantastic efforts throughout the
year.
Since the
last newsletter (July 2009), Laura has kindly organised the following sessions
on Thursday nights:
- Informal:
09 July - 08 Oct 2009
- Formal 6
Week Course: 05 November - 17 December 2009
- Informal:
21 January - May 2010
- Formal 6
Week Course: 13 May - 17 June 2010
- Informal:
July - November 2010
- Formal 6
Week Course: 04 November - 16 December 2010
Just also
to let you know that Ron was told in November that we anticipated making a bit
more profit on the 6 week courses because the charge was raised from £30 up to
£42. Ron was offered a rise, but kindly declined. Can I therefore make the
following proposals:
Proposal
1: that any extra
monies raised can be used to subsidise food at any future ‘Fun Night’. The
participants will essentially be coachees so they will get their ‘money’ back.
This of course is not forgetting that any profits will go towards the loss we
make as a club on court revenue on Thursday nights. Ron was fine with this
suggestion.
Proposal
2: This proposal
has also been discussed with Laura. We could give discounts on further courses
to coachees who have paid the full £42. In essence the price was raised from
£30 to £42 in order to try to incentivise people to continue attending - the idea
being that quite a bit of money has been paid out, and so participants don’t
want to waste it. In effect the proposal means that if people have a good
attendance record then they will be ‘rewarded’ with subsequent discounts ?
Squash
Light Replacement Fittings:
The July
2009 Newsletter reported issues with the court lights. Five of eleven tubes
(T8) fitted by Martin Howe as part of full court refurbs in April 2009 had
failed. These were replaced on 16 March 2010. See details in VGM [http://theupsclub.co.uk/upsdowns/_sq_vgm_280210.htm]
There was a
slight hic-cup with some tubes failing subsequently and these were replaced
free of charge. They have been fine to date.
Squash Coin
Light Meter.
Background
details are recorded in VGM [http://theupsclub.co.uk/upsdowns/_sq_vgm_100810.htm]
In summary,
the EDR meter was in operation from 1998 (when light charges were increased to
£1 per session). The meter began to malfunction in early 2010. The meter
sometimes didn’t register a coin with the appropriate minute units.
The new LCI
Wyvern 2000 meter was fitted on 31.10.10 and has been working fine to date,
apart from the real time clock (crystal is faulty) which will be fixed in the
New Year under warranty.
The new
meter will accept £2 coins, and so I wondered if you would like to have this
provision activated ?
Whilst we
were making up our minds on a new meter we operated an ‘Honesty System’ for
collecting light money. There were some queries about this at the time
(summarised in box below) and so I’ve tried to provide some answers.
EDR meter became
totally unreliable on 12 August 2010.
At this point the
meter was placed on over-ride and an ‘honesty box’ system adopted.
EDR Muller Meter Decommissioned 23.10.10. New LCI meter installed 31.10.10
12
August, 2010 – 15 September, 2010
Banked £92.60 on 28.09.10
54 slots booked in
period (24 weekdays).
If all played =
£108
16 ad hoc
coaching slots (4 Thurs sessions). Approx 4 x £6 = £24
Approx total
should be £132.
Suggest deficit is
most likely due to drop-out on coaching revenue ?
16
September, 2010 – 23 October, 2010
Banked £119.60 on 15.11.10 (delay in banking - coins
retained for ‘teaching’ new LCI meter)
78 slots booked in
period (27 weekdays).
If all played =
£156
24 ad hoc
coaching slots (6 Thurs sessions). Approx 6 x £6 = £36
Approx total
should be £192.
Maybe again the
most likely reason is drop-out on revenue from coaching ?
23
October, 2010 – 31 October, 2010
No takings as
system direct wired in readiness for new LCI Wyvern2000 meter
